The Culture
Edinburgh is wonderfully rich with art and culture. Admire the impressive collections of the National Museum of Scotland, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery of Modern Art. Take a literary walking tour and learn about the many famous books that were inspired here, including Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter. Have a drink in the Oxford Bar, the favourite pub of Ian Rankin’s fictional detective Inspector Rebus. You could spend a year in Edinburgh and only scratch the surface of the wealth of history, art, theatre and culture this city has to offer.
The Festivals
This city really knows how to throw a festival! The Edinburgh Fringe Festival brings the city to life every August with thousands of theatre performances, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an impressive show of bagpipe pageantry, the Edinburgh International Book Festival is a bookworm’s dream come true, Hogmany is an epic New Year’s Eve Party and Burn’s Night is a tribute to Scotland’s most famous poet.
The Food
Edinburgh is becoming one of the culinary hotspots of the UK, so don’t forget to bring your appetite. Offering more than just haggis (although you must try this cultural dish), Edinburgh has a great selection of fine dining, ethnic food and much more. Try the fresh seafood at the Ship on the Shore, dine on the fresh and crispy pizza at La Favorita, or treat yourself to superb venison, beef or lamb at The Grain Store.
